Habitly vs Habitica: Why I Switched to a Simpler Habit Tracker

A side-by-side comparison of Habitly and Habitica reveals key differences in punishment, AI suggestions, and ease of use. Find out which habit tracker is right for you.

Habitly vs Habitica: Why I Switched to a Simpler Habit Tracker

If you’ve been using Habitica to turn your daily tasks into an RPG, you might have noticed it can feel a bit heavy after a while. The pixel art is charming, but managing a whole character, gear, quests, and a party just to remember to drink water can get old. That’s when I started looking for something simpler, and that’s how I ended up testing habitly vs habitica side by side for a couple of weeks.

What actually pushed me to try Habitly

I’ve been a Habitica user on and off for years. The gamification works for a while, but I kept hitting a wall: the app expects you to set everything up manually, and if you don’t log in for a day, your character takes damage. It started feeling like a chore. I wanted something that would nudge me without punishing me, and ideally something that could suggest habits based on what I actually do. That’s when I heard about Habitly and its AI habit tracker approach.

Three things I noticed right away

1. The AI suggestions are actually useful, but not perfect

Habitly asks you a few questions about your goals (health, study, focus) and then generates a routine. The first set of suggestions felt reasonable — “morning stretch,” “read 10 pages,” “log meals.” But after a week, the AI started repeating suggestions I’d already skipped. It’s not as adaptive as I hoped. Still, for getting started, it beats staring at a blank list in Habitica.

2. The streak system feels less punishing

Habitica penalises you for missing a day. Habitly just tracks streaks without penalties. If you miss a day, the streak resets, but you don’t lose progress or take damage. That alone made me more likely to open the app again after a lazy Sunday. It’s a small difference, but it changed my behaviour.

3. Habitly is much faster to use day-to-day

Opening Habitica means checking quest progress, maybe buying gear, reading guild messages. Habitly is just a list of habits with a check button. It’s boring but efficient. If you’re the kind of person who opens a habit tracker and closes it in ten seconds, Habitly wins on speed.

The biggest tradeoff

Habitly lacks the social and motivational layers that make Habitica sticky for some people. There’s no party system, no chat, no guilds. If you thrive on accountability from others, Habitly will feel lonely. I missed the occasional “nice work” from my party members. Habitly is a solo experience, and that’s fine for some, but it’s a real loss if you’re used to the community aspect.

Where I’m still cautious

Habitly is relatively new. The AI habit tracker app free tier is generous, but the app still has some rough edges. For example, editing a habit after the AI generates it isn’t as intuitive as I’d like. And I’m not sure how well the AI will scale if you have more than a handful of habits. I’d say it’s promising, but not yet a full replacement for a mature app like Habitica if you’re a heavy user.

Who should switch and who should stay

  • If you want a lightweight, AI-guided start and don’t need social features, try Habitly.
  • If you love the RPG progression and community, stick with Habitica.
  • If you’re somewhere in between, you might end up using both — Habitly for daily tracking and Habitica for weekly challenges.

I’m still using Habitly after two weeks, which is longer than most habit apps last on my phone. That’s a decent sign. But I’m keeping Habitica installed for now. The comparison isn’t about which is better overall — it’s about which fits your current motivation style.
